Creating Permanence

Traditional exterior ornament throughout history has reflected, even enhanced a feeling of shelter and permanence by honoring the prevailing climate and topography.
This simple precast stone entry (left) for an Italian villa designed by Todd Remington illustrates his understanding of the relationship between traditional architecture and nature.

Utilizing stock parts Todd was able to create an elegant and exciting entry that appears inviting, but also sheltering.

The photo below illustrates, Todd Remington's use of a stone base to anchor a home on it's hillside site, reinforcing a feeling of permanence and durability. Arched windows and corbeled bump outs above respect the nature of the stone material and enhance the stone base's character.

A tall masonry base for the ski cabin at right guards against the snow's deteriorating effects. But also makes the cabin feel appropriate to its location. Rustic cedar siding and large fascias conribute to a sense this cabin was made for the snow.
