Because
good architecture creates a meaningful sense of place, Todd Remington
specializes in understanding a site's local influences. Also known as
"vernacular architecture", local styles and design strategies
are developed over generations living in a specific locale and climate.
But also reflect the history of the people who inhabit the place.
For example, the buildings above were designed by Todd Remington for a
resort in Wisconsin's rural countryside. Building shape, materials use,
and color were used to make connections with the area's rural roots. Even
the placement of buildings around a large commons reflects a widely adopted
homesteading tradition for the area.
Sense
of place is not limited to a building's exterior. Imagine sitting in the "farm"
kitchen at right and being totally immersed in rural life. A refuge from the
glare and grime of urban life.
Materials
and details play an important roll for creating a sense of place. This back
entry (left) for a new shingle style home was designed by Todd Remington.
Rough
cut shingles reflect the beach side atmosphere of the site. Battered square
columns resting on heavy stone bases also reflect the local climate while
creating a connection with the area's historical architecture.
